The area of Silver Banks (about 60 km north of the Dominican Republic) as well as the bay of Samana, are among the most important areas where whales can be observed. The bay of Samana receives the second biggest number of whales every year, after Silver Banks. In the Samana area the whales are conceived and in the following year, the newborns are being raised. The mothers prepare them for their journey back into their northern living area. Scientists count up to 1000 whales alone in the Samana bay area between January and April. The whales take a journey between 2100 to almost 6000 km to arrive in the Dominican Republic, where they spend their total time with conceiving and raising their babies. They  do not eat at all during this period, they eat all the food they need during their stay in fresher areas in the north. Whales may reach up to 15 meters and reach a weight up to 40 tons.
